Köhler's Medicinal Plants

The tea plant is well worth celebrating for its beauty as well as for its usefulness. It's a small evergreen plant with dark, pointy leaves with serrated edges. Fragrant, delicate white flowers bloom in the Spring.

We celebrate this most important plant with a beautiful representation from Kohler's work of the late 19th century, on our Signature range of teas.

Of true historical botanical importance, Köhler's Medicinal Plants is a three-volume work by Hermann Köhler, a German chemist and physician.

A guide to the known botanicals of the time, it contains hundreds of stunning and precise illustrations, produced by a process called chromolithography, the common method of producing colour prints at the time.

Sri Lanka has a diversity in its geography and climate that continues to amaze us with its range of taste and aromatic nuances within its tea. Our Platinum Blend features a two carefully selected single origin black teas from two very different terroirs, that offer unique characters and flavours.

In 1840 the first tea estate was established under the supervision of The East India Company in the Nuwara Eliya region in the island’s centre, a landscape with blue sky and beautiful misty mountains as the background, tea estates on the slopes of the luscious hills, and water falls cascading. From the high altitudes of the Pedro Tea Estate in Nuwara Eliya, this Orange Pekoe provides the bright and delicate floral notes.
From the Lumbini Tea Estate 100km away, on the edge of the southern Singharaja rainforest, the combination of temperature, weather and soil allow the natural characteristics of this rare platinum-tipped lowland tea to shine through, developing an exquisite black tea with complex notes of caramel and a sweetness unlike any other.

With decades of experience and a rare skill level, these teas are expertly blended by our Tea Master to produce a exceptional cup – elegant and nuanced whilst remaining robust and full of character.

Stories

James Taylor - The Father of Ceylon Tea

James Taylor was a 17-year Scott when he left London in 1851, landing in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, and sent to work on a coffee estate near Kandy. Coffee was the predominant crop at the time but was prone to being destroyed by fungus.

After gaining some years of planting experience, Taylor cleared 19 acres of forest in the Loolcondera Estate and in 1867 planted tea for the very first in Sr Lanka, using seedlings from Assam.
Not only was he a pioneering planter, but he also learned and developed new production methods, from trial and error on his veranda to his first tea factory and his ‘ground-breaking’ tea cutting machine that allowed production to grow from a few pounds to 23,000 tonnes just 20 years later.

Known for high quality, Ceylon teas commanded a high price in the London tea auctions of the 19th century.

Taylor died aged only 57 but is still today regarded as the pioneer of the now global Sri Lankan tea industry, the 4th largest producer in the world.

  • FAQ

    Does this tea include caffeine and is there more or less than in coffee?
    Yes, all tea like coffee, contains caffeine. The amount in both teas and coffees does vary, depending on the type, but typically Sri Lankan black tea is lighter than other teas in caffeine content, usually between 50 and 90mg for a normally brewed 230ml serving. This compares to about 95mg for a normal cup of coffee. The best advice is to treat tea and coffee similarly if you have a problem with caffeine.
